Denise Harmening Ph.D.

Denise Harmening Ph.D has been in the field of Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine for over 25 years. Her research in red cell and platelet preservation has led to seven patents. Dr. Harmening served as the Director of Educational Services in the U.S. for the American Association of Blood Banks from 1982-1984. She has been the principle investigator for seven grants from Health and Human Services and has completed over 15 clinical trials. Her book, Modern Blood Banking and Transfusion Practices is in its fifth edition and is a recommended reference by professional societies and is used nationally as well as internationally.

Dr. Harmening’s original research dealt with the use of solid time-released buffering systems for the storage of red cells and platelets. Dr. Harmening also performed the original testing on the current gel system when it was initially brought from Europe to the United States by AMTEC Corporation.

In addition, Dr. Harmening is serving as a consultant on investigations of a new technology based on Micro-Electro-Mechanical System(MEMS) for routine blood bank ABO testing. Dr. Harmening has been a member of the National Commission on Allied Health Implementation Task Force of the Department of Health and Human Services from 1996 to 1998, and in 1999 she received the “Excellence in Education Award,” a national recognition given by the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Locally, she was named one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women for the years 2001 and 2003. In April of 2008, Dr. Harmening was awarded the Karen Tiegerman Memorial Award by the Massachusetts Association of Blood Banks, which honors an individual who has made substantial contributions in the field of Transfusion Medicine and Cellular Therapy. In October of 2008, Dr. Harmening will receive the Sally Frank Memorial Award given by the American Association of Blood Banks at the AABB annual meeting in Montreal, Canada.

Robert O. Ryan, Ph.D.

Senior Scientist, Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI) and Adjunct Professor, Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology, University of California, Berkeley and Founder and Chief Scientific Officer, Lypro Biosciences Inc.

Dr. Ryan has extensive research experience in the area of lipid transport and metabolism related to cardiovascular disease. He has published over 125 original research articles and presented his work at national and international conferences. He is a fellow of the American Heart Association and a member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He has a long history of success in grant competitions and currently is Principal Investigator on three NIH and foundation research grant awards. In 2003, along with a colleague, Dr. Ryan founded Lypro Biosciences Inc., a start up biotechnology venture that has recently spun off from basic research activities conducted at CHORI.

Following completion of his Ph.D. Dr. Ryan was recipient of an NIH National Research Service Award Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Arizona. In 1988 he joined the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Alberta as Assistant Professor and Heritage Medical Scholar. In 1995 Dr. Ryan was promoted to Professor of biochemistry and in 1999 was appointed director of the Lipid and Lipoprotein Research Group in the Faculty of Medicine. In 2000 Dr. Ryan returned to California and joined CHORI. He is currently a Senior Scientist and member of the Facilities Committee, chair of the Faculty Development Committee and a member of the UC Berkeley Molecular and Biochemical Nutrition Graduate Group Recruitment Committee. Dr. Ryan is a member of the NIH Integrated Nutrition and Metabolic Processes Study Section (2006 – 2010).

Dr. Ryan is recipient of numerous honors and awards including the 1991 Canadian Lipoprotein Conference Simon-Pierre Noel Lecture Award, a Medical Research Council of Canada Scientist Award (1993), the Bristol Myers-Squibb-Canadian Lipoprotein Conference Senior Scientist Award (1993), the Canadian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Merck Frosst Prize (1995), an Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Medical Scientist Award (1998) and a Medical Research Council of Canada Senior Scientist Award (1999). In 2006 Dr. Ryan was recipient of a CHORI Service Award and in 2008, was elected Vice-Chair (2010) and Chair (2012) of the Gordon Research Conference on Lipid Metabolism.

Dr. Ryan earned his B.Sc. in Medical Sciences (1977) and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry (1982) from the University of Nevada.
